A few things to Consider:

Some people attending a SUPY class have practiced yoga before and may even be pretty good at it.

Others approach SUPY as an opportunity to try something new because they love and appreciate the beauty of nature.

Whatever reason brings you to a Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga class, know that there are many benefits to a SUPY practice.

Here are things to consider:

1. In SUPY as in yoga, the idea is not that you have to be “good’ at something or the ‘best” at something. It’s the idea that you have a willingness to learn something new. To experience something and be open to the experience it provides. SUPY is a great way to gain physical strength while having fun.

2. SUPY is challenging. However you will not be asked to do difficult poses, instead we will explore what each of us is capable of trying. Floating along the water provides an incredible sense of peace. Adding yoga movement on a paddleboard will help strengthen your core, improve your balance, sharpen your focus and leave you feeling centered and calm. The paddle back after a SUPY class is often very quiet as the group reflects on the satisfaction and feeling of accomplishment and observing the beautiful coast. It’s a blissful, peaceful feeling as we feel closer to nature and to our own selves with a renewed sense of appreciation for ourselves.

3. Did we mention that it is FUN!!!! We encourage you to come with an open mind, a sense of adventure and most importantly a sense of humor as even the most seasoned of yogis will fall into the water at one time or another.

What is SUP?

Stand Up Paddleboard and or Stand up Paddleboard Yoga (SUPY). SUPY (Stand up paddleboard yoga) is a relatively new idea that combines the beauty of the outdoors with the calm and grounding nature of a yoga practice.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes. It’s a good idea to have decent swimming skills as you will be on a body of water. While you will be required to wear a life preserver, if you do not know how to swim at all, this is something you would not want to do.

Can we bring our kids?

Children under 18 years of age MUST be accompanied by a responsible adult. Children 14– 18 years of age MUST be accompanied by their parent. No exceptions.

What if I fall?

You can and you likely will fall at some point in time. Although, not everyone falls off of their boards on the first time! (You might surprise yourself.) Besides - it’s fun! Stay calm and lighthearted. Just enjoy the adventure.

How will I know what to do and when?

The Tidal Soul experience includes an instruction portion before we even get our feet in the water. This session will introduce you to the equipment, teach you how to paddle, how to stop your vessel from colliding with other objects, how to turn around, how to fall properly and how to get back up. Because we are in nature and there are hazards, it is imperative that you arrive at least 15 minutes prior to launch time to receive this instruction which includes what you will need to avoid while on the water.

Do I have to know how to do yoga?

Absolutely not! While Tidal Soul is capable of teaching you complex poses, the yoga being offered in your sssion is accessible for beginners, too! If you are an advanced yogi we will ensure that you are safely executing the poses you wish to attempt.

What should I wear?

Swimsuits, water shoes, hats, sunglasses. No jeans, metal buckles or chains (that will weigh you down in case you fall). Keep in mind, anything you bring onto your board has a chance of falling off. Do NOT bring valuables. Please wear SUNBLOCK and stay hydrated.

Do I HAVE to wear swim shoes?

It is highly recommended that you do. The nature of our beautiful waterways presents some unique things, like oyster beds. Oyster beds are extremely sharp and can give a deep cut. We want to avoid situations like that. Wear or do not wear swim shoes at your own risk. No sneakers or shoes with harsh textures that could scratch or ruin the boards will be permitted.

What if I forget something?

Tidal Soul keeps a small inventory of unisex water shoes, phone cases, sunblock and buggy bands (bug repellant) for your convenience. Drinking water will be available, feel free to bring a reusable container. Please be mindful of our environment and do not bring plastic water bottles or leave trash behind.

Hydration

Often the sun is very hot so come to class well hydrated. Hydrate before the workout. It is always important to drink plenty of water when exercising. Because it is difficult to carry much on the paddle board and there won’t keep things on the board during the workout, most hydrating will need to be done before and after the workout.
